Chapter 14 - The Colors of Healing

Summer arrived with brilliant sunshine, warming the rolling hills of the estate.

Clara had transformed the old, disused carriage house at the back of the property into a bright, airy art and design studio. Canvases lined the walls—not filled with dark, suffocating memories, but alive with vibrant cobalt blues, emerald greens, and warm golds.

Leo spent his summer afternoons there, painting alongside his sister or riding bicycles with Christian down the winding paved paths of the estate. The timid, malnourished boy from South Brooklyn had gained weight; his laughter was now loud and frequent, his cheeks sun-kissed.

One Sunday afternoon, Clara was standing at an easel, blending watercolors of the sunset over the valley.

Christian walked in, carrying a picnic basket. He leaned over her shoulder, admiring the painting. "You have an incredible eye for light."

"Light only exists because of contrast," Clara replied thoughtfully, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. "Without the darkness, we wouldn't appreciate the dawn."

Christian smiled, kissing her forehead softly before resting his brow against hers. "Leo asked me something strange while we were riding bikes earlier."

"Oh? What did he ask?"

"He asked if he could call me dad."

Clara’s breath caught, her eyes instantly shining with unshed tears. "And what did you say?"

Christian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, polished wooden box. He knelt before her on the studio floor, surrounded by colors and canvas.

"I told him," Christian said, his voice husky with deep, unwavering emotion, "that I had to ask his sister if she would do me the greatest honor of my life first."

He opened the box, revealing a vintage platinum ring set with a brilliant sapphire surrounded by diamonds—warm, timeless, and radiant.

"Clara, will you marry me?"

May you like

Clara fell to her knees before him, burying her face into his neck as she nodded frantically, laughing through her tears. "Yes... yes, Christian! A thousand times yes!"

He caught her in his arms, holding her tightly, their hearts beating in unison against the light of the setting sun.
