Chapter 14 - The Race Against Dawn

The armored SUV tore through the winding mountain roads at breakneck speed, tires screaming against the wet asphalt as rain lashed the windshield like liquid shrapnel. Inside the cabin, the stench of blood, gunpowder, and terror was suffocating.

""Faster, Julian!"" Christian commanded, his voice raw, stripped of all authority except a father's frantic desperation.

""I'm redlining the engine, Boss!"" Julian yelled over the roar of the V8, running red lights and weaving through early morning commuter traffic with reckless precision. ""Five minutes out!""

In the back seat, Serena was on her knees, pressing her face against Mia’s cold hands, sobbing hysterically. ""Mia, baby, look at mommy. Look at me! Stay awake! Please, God, don't take her, take me instead!""

Mia’s eyelids fluttered, barely revealing the amber irises Christian had recognized hours earlier. Her small chest rose and fell in ragged, agonizing hitches.

Christian stripped off his bloody jacket, wrapping his warm woolen sweater around her small, shivering frame. He gathered her into his lap, pressing her close to his chest, feeling the terrifyingly weak, irregular rhythm of her heart against his own steady beat.

""Look at me, Mia,"" Christian demanded, his voice thick with unspilt tears, an agonizing tremor shaking his hands. ""You wanted to teach me manners, remember? You said I had to say thank you.""

Mia’s dry lips parted slightly. A faint, wheezing breath escaped her throat. ""Did... did you say it?""

""Not yet,"" Christian whispered, brushing her damp curls away from her pale forehead, his vision blurring as tears finally spilled over his hardened, scarred cheeks. ""I haven't said it yet. So you have to stay awake to hear it. You understand me? You don't get to leave until I say thank you.""

""Bunny..."" she murmured, her tiny fingers twitching feebly in her lap.

Christian looked around frantically, spotted the dirty, blood-stained plush rabbit on the vehicle floor, grabbed it, and tucked it beneath her chin. ""Bunny is right here. Bunny is fine. The tape held, Mia. The tape held.""

""I'm... sleepy, Daddy..."" she whispered, her head rolling back against his arm, her eyes sliding fully shut.

""Mia! No!"" Serena shrieked, clutching the child's feet.

""Her pulse is fading!"" Christian shouted, placing his large fingers against her tiny carotid artery, feeling the thread-like flutter dissolve into terrifying nothingness. ""Julian!""

""We're here!"" Julian roared, slamming the brakes as the SUV jumped the curb, smashing through the emergency bay barricade of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and grinding to a halt right in front of the sliding glass doors.

Christian kicked the SUV door open before the vehicle had even completely stopped. He burst through the emergency entrance carrying the limp child in his arms, his clothes soaked in blood, his eyes wild like a madman's.

""Doctors! Move!"" Christian’s thunderous roar cleared the entire triage lobby in seconds.

Four trauma nurses and an emergency physician rushed forward with a gurney, their eyes widening in shock as they recognized the billionaire mobster standing before them, covered in gore, holding a dying child.

""Pediatric cardiac arrest!"" the doctor yelled, catching Mia’s limp body as Christian placed her on the white sheet. ""Get Dr. Evans down here immediately! Charge the pediatric paddles to twenty joules! Move! Move!""

May you like

They wheeled the gurney through the double doors, leaving Christian and Serena standing in the sterile, glaring white light of the hallway.

The doors swung shut, locking them out.
