Chapter 2 - The Shattered Porcelain

The silence in the grand estate stretched like drawn wire. Julian leaned forward slightly, his sharp eyes darting between the girl's tiny wrist and Christian’s locked jaw. Serena snatched Mia by the shoulders and pulled the toddler hard against her chest, her knuckles turning white against her dark maid's apron.

""Mr. Vance, forgive her, please. She doesn't understand,"" Serena stammered, her voice shaking so violently her chin quivered. ""She’s only a baby. I will clean this immediately. I'll take her to the staff quarters. You will never see her again, I swear on my life.""

Christian raised a single tattooed hand. The gesture cut through her desperate babbling instantly. ""Julian.""

""Yes, Christian,"" the associate answered, voice low and perfectly composed.

""Take the child to the east solarium. Have Mrs. Gable bring her fruit.""

Serena gasped, her body recoiling as if she had been struck. ""No! Please, Mr. Vance! Don't touch her! Take it out on me, fire me, send me to prison, but don't hurt my daughter!""

Christian didn't even look at her. He crouched slowly, descending until his tailored knees hovered inches above the spilled tea and broken porcelain shards. His dark gaze bore directly into the child’s face. Mia did not cower; she simply tucked the grey rabbit’s long ears under her chin and stared back into the abyss of his dark eyes.

""Julian won't hurt you,"" Christian said, his tone devoid of warmth yet oddly stripped of malice. ""Go with him.""

""Bunny is hungry,"" Mia said plainly. ""He likes strawberries.""

""You'll get strawberries,"" Christian replied, standing back up in one fluid motion.

Julian stepped forward, offering an open hand. Mia hesitated for a fraction of a second, examined Julian’s slate-grey suit, judged him worthy, and placed her small, warm fingers inside his broad palm. The consigliere led the fearless toddler down the vast, vaulted hallway, leaving Serena huddled on the floor, trembling like a leaf caught in a tempest.

Christian waited until the heavy double doors of the corridor clicked shut. Then, the veneer of civil patience shattered entirely. He turned toward Serena, his expression darkening into something monstrous and volatile. The cold indifference of the mafia don returned, amplified tenfold by an agonizing suspicion that set his nerves on fire.

""Get up, Serena,"" he said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper that chilled the opulent air.

She struggled to her feet, leaning heavily against the ornate wainscoting for support, tears streaming unchecked down her pale cheeks.

""Five years ago,"" Christian stepped into her personal space, towering over her like a grim executioner. ""You vanished from the northern safehouse without taking a single dollar of the severance you were owed.""

""I... I wanted a quiet life,"" she whispered, looking anywhere but at his face.

""You lied to me,"" he said, reaching out with lightning speed to wrap his fingers around the fabric of her collar, pulling her upward until she was forced to look directly into his wrathful gaze. ""Whose daughter is she, Serena?""

Serena’s lips trembled, but before she could formulate an answer, the front doors burst open, and a breathless soldier entered, holding a blood-splattered burner phone.
