Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Debt

The medical revelation hung in the subterranean bunker heavier than the impending gang war outside. Christian kept his hand pressed against Serena's bleeding knee, the white linen soaking red, but his mind was miles away, racing through hospital ledgers, donor registries, and the private charitable trust he maintained solely as a tax shelter and money-laundering funnel.

""A heart defect,"" Christian repeated, the words tasting bitter. ""And you didn't call me? You applied for a maid's position in my home instead?""

""Would you have believed me?"" Serena countered, her voice dropping into a desperate hiss so Mia wouldn't hear. ""Or would you have assumed I was looking for a payoff? Would you have torn her away from me, buried me in a ditch, and raised her as another hollow soldier in your war?""

Christian stood up abruptly, tossing the soiled handkerchief aside. Her words struck bone. Five years ago, he would have done exactly that. He had been a machine of pure ambition, devoid of mercy, governed solely by the brutal calculus of power.

""Julian,"" Christian snapped.

""Sir?""

""Call Dr. Evans. Tell him to cancel his afternoon surgeries. I want the finest pediatric cardiologist in the state brought to this bunker within the hour. If the roads are blocked, use the chopper.""

Julian nodded once and pulled out his encrypted phone, stepping into the comms room to execute the order.

Mia slid off the swivel chair, her small red shoes tapping against the raised steel flooring. She walked over to Christian, entirely unafraid of his towering height or the dark fury radiating from his posture. She reached up and pulled on the bottom hem of his suit jacket until he looked down at her.

""My bunny needs a bandage too,"" she stated, holding up the plush toy, showing him a loose stitch near the ear.

Christian stared at the toy. For a man who had negotiated multi-million-dollar cartels and executed traitors without blinking, a broken stuffed rabbit presented an impossible puzzle. He slowly crouched down to her eye level, his knees popping softly in the quiet room.

""I don't have bandages for rabbits,"" he told her sternly.

""You have tape,"" she argued, pointing toward the tactical supply desk where heavy rolls of black electrical tape sat beside stacks of ammunition magazines. ""Tape fixes everything. Mommy uses tape when my shoes break.""

Christian felt a sharp pang in his throat. The Vance fortune controlled hundreds of millions, yet his daughter was talking about taped shoes. He reached over, grabbed the roll of black electrical tape, tore off a small, precise strip with his teeth, and wrapped it carefully around the bunny's frayed ear.

""Better?"" he asked, handing it back.

Mia inspected the black tape job with severe critical focus, then nodded with approval. ""You're a good fixer. Even if you're grumpy.""

Before Christian could respond, the primary monitor bank flickered. The static cleared to reveal a live feed from the compound's front gate. A black SUV had pulled up, and a man in an expensive grey overcoat stepped out, holding a megaphone and a white envelope.

It was Viktor Moretti himself, smiling directly into the surveillance camera.
