Chapter 9 - The Confession Beneath the Earth

The concrete room seemed to shrink, suffocating under the weight of Christian’s fury. His fingers were wrapped tightly around Serena’s throat, not cutting off her air completely, but applying enough pressure to remind her that her life hung by a fragile thread.

""Answer me!"" he bellowed, his voice rattling the metal shelves lining the room.

Serena did not struggle. She didn't scratch at his hands or kick at his shins. She just looked at him with hollow, tear-filled eyes, accepting her fate with a quiet despair that made Christian's heart clench violently.

""Stop it! Stop hurting my mommy!""

A tiny fist hammered against Christian’s thigh. Mia was there, throwing her small weight against his leg, hitting him with all the strength her frail, four-year-old body possessed. In her other hand, she still clutched the taped rabbit.

""Let her go! You bad man! Let her go!"" Mia screamed, tears finally breaking from her eyes.

Christian looked down at the little girl, then slowly lowered his arm, releasing Serena. The maid slid down the wall, gasping for breath, coughing softly into her hands. Mia immediately wrapped her arms around her mother's neck, glaring up at Christian like a cornered lion cub.

""Talk,"" Christian ordered, stepping back, his chest heaving. ""Before I decide to let Viktor's mortars finish this house.""

Serena pulled Mia into her lap, burying her face in the child’s hair before looking up. ""Viktor found us in Chicago two months ago. Mia had collapsed at daycare. The doctors said she needed an experimental valve surgery... three hundred thousand dollars, or she wouldn't see her fifth birthday.""

Her voice cracked, shattered by the horrific reality she had lived through. ""I went to every bank. I went to every charity. No one helped. Then Viktor's men showed up at the clinic. They knew who Mia was. Viktor told me that if I took the maid's job, if I put the vial in your tea... he would pay for the surgery. He gave me the poison yesterday.""

Christian’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. ""And why didn't you do it?""

""Because I saw you with the garden dogs,"" Serena sobbed. ""I saw you give your coat to the gatekeeper when it rained. I remembered... I remembered that beneath all this blood and darkness, there was a man who once held me gently in that safehouse. I couldn't do it. I dropped the cup on purpose!""

""You didn't drop it,"" Mia interrupted, wiping her nose with the back of her sleeve, her small voice cutting through the heavy drama. ""Mommy was crying. Her hands were shaking like a leaf. I slapped the cup out of her hand because she said bad tea makes people go to sleep forever.""

Christian froze. He looked at the child, the realization crashing over him like a tidal wave. The little girl had saved his life. She had recognized the poison, sensed her mother's agony, and shattered the cup on the floor.

Julian’s voice crackled through the intercom speaker on the wall. ""Boss! The outer perimeter is down. Moretti’s reinforcements brought heavy artillery. They’re storming the main house. We have three minutes before they breach the lower blast doors!""
