Chapter 1 - The Standoff in the Grand Salon

The air in the opulent living room felt thick enough to suffocate, laden with the metallic tang of ozone and fear. Beneath the glittering crystal chandelier, Officer Ryan stood with his hand rigid near his tactical belt, his eyes wide and fixed on the kneeling man. Ethan’s knuckles were white as he clutched the portable medical monitor, his white collared shirt stained with sweat and desperation. Across from him, Nurse Claire cradled the tiny newborn wrapped tightly in a blue blanket, her face a mask of professional rigidity mixed with deep internal panic. ""Get away from him!"" Ryan shouted, his voice echoing off the high-molded ceilings. Ethan didn't flinch. His gaze remained locked on the erratic green lines of the monitor screen, his breathing ragged and uncontrolled. ""Stop warming him right now,"" Claire commanded, her voice trembling slightly as she pulled the infant closer to her chest. Ryan stepped forward, his boots crunching on the expensive rug, ready to tackle the frantic father. ""What are you talking about? He’s scratching!"" Ryan barked, misinterpreting the frantic movements. Ethan turned his head slowly, his eyes blazing with a terrifying, unhinged fury that made even the seasoned police officers freeze in their tracks. ""If he dies, nobody in this room leaves,"" Ethan whispered, the quiet threat carrying more weight than a gunshot. Ryan swallowed hard, his hand hovering uncertainly over his radio mic as the monitor emitted a long, high-pitched warning tone that signaled the beginning of the end.
