Chapter 9 - Whispers in the Dark

The sharp sound of the baby's cry brought a collective wave of relief, but it was immediately shattered by the distinct sound of heavy boots splashing through the water behind them. They were closing in. ""They found the bypass vent,"" Ryan warned, cocking his weapon as he aimed down the straight concrete tube. ""How much farther to the boat, Ethan?"" ""Two hundred yards. Around the bend,"" Ethan panted, carefully lifting the infant from Claire's shaking arms and tucking the child securely against his chest. ""Move, now!"" They bolted down the remaining length of the tunnel, the damp walls blurring past them in the dim light. Claire stumbled, her professional composure entirely shattered, revealing the vulnerable woman beneath the uniform. Ryan fired two warning shots back down the corridor to suppress their pursuers, the gunshots deafening in the confined space. As they rounded the final concrete curve, a faint sliver of moonlight pierced through the darkness ahead, illuminating the rusted iron ladder leading up to the exit grate and the bobbing silhouette of a getaway motorboat.
