Chapter 11 - Blood on the Landing

""Drop the gun!"" the federal agent shouted, stepping out from behind Clara with his weapon raised.
Marcus fired twice without hesitation. The double-tap caught the agent squarely in the chest, the kinetic force slamming him against the cinderblock wall before he slumped down the concrete steps, his radio clattering down into the dark stairwell.
Evelyn shrieked, backing into the corner, pressing her hands against her ears as she slid to the floor in total surrender.
Clara stood her ground on the narrow landing, her eyes locked on Marcus’s cold, lifeless gaze. The blood from the wound she had given him on the balcony had soaked his collar, but his hands were steady. He was a professional, operating purely on survival.
""You should have stayed in your lane, little schoolteacher,"" Marcus said, his voice flat, devoid of malice or pity. ""The syndicate doesn't leave loose threads. Not Julian. Not Evelyn. And especially not the girl holding the digital keys to sixty million in offshore port accounts.""
""If you shoot me, Marcus, you walk away with nothing,"" Clara said, keeping her voice astonishingly level. She reached slowly into her coat pocket, keeping her fingers in plain view. ""The encryption token isn't in the warehouse, and it isn't in this building. It’s routed through an automated dead-man’s switch. The second my biometric pulse drops to zero, the funds are instantly released to the Federal Asset Forfeiture reserve.""
Marcus’s finger hesitated on the trigger. A fraction of an inch of tension. ""You're bluffing. You’re an English teacher who inherited a strip of rusted dockyard.""
""I was an English teacher three years ago,"" Clara countered, taking a single step toward him, closing the distance just enough to exploit his hesitation. ""Before I lived with a family of sociopaths who taught me exactly how leverage works in this city. You need the bypass code, Marcus. Without it, your syndicate bosses won't just kill you—they'll hunt your family from one end of the continent to the other.""
Marcus’s eyes flickered toward the stairwell, calculating the risk. In that split second of doubt, Clara didn't pull out a flash drive.
She pulled out the industrial pepper gel she had palmed from the agent’s tactical belt as he fell.
She triggered the canister directly into Marcus’s eyes.
A thick stream of orange chemical agent hit him squarely in the face. Marcus roared in sudden, blinding agony, his gun firing wild into the ceiling, raining concrete dust over them.
Clara charged forward, driving her shoulder into his midsection and sending him crashing backward through the open doorway onto the carpeted floor of the 35th floor.
She grabbed the fallen agent’s sidearm from the stairs, leveled it with both hands, and aimed it straight at the thrashing assassin.
""Clara, don't!"" Evelyn wailed from the stairwell. ""He’s the only one who knows where the vault coordinates are!""
May you like
Clara lowered the weapon slightly, her finger resting against the trigger guard. ""I don't care about the vault, Evelyn. I care about who gave the order to kill my father.""
Marcus, coughing and wiping furiously at his burning eyes, managed a horrific, rasping laugh. ""Your father? You think we killed him? Check your mother-in-law's safe deposit box, Clara. She was the one who signed his death certificate.""
