Chapter 2 - Dust and Deception

The eastern waterfront smelled of diesel, rotting kelp, and rusted steel. The address stamped on the mystery key led Clara far away from Evelyn’s gilded penthouses, terminating in front of a weathered brick warehouse framed by razor-wire fences. A rusted brass plaque beside the steel side door read: St. Clair Antiquities & Logistics.
Clara stepped out of her car, pulling her coat tight to ward off the damp coastal fog. The red wine on her face had dried into a stiff, dark scab, but she ignored the sting. She selected the odd key, inserted it into the heavy deadbolt, and held her breath.
The cylinder turned smoothly, an expensive lock hidden behind a cheap industrial facade.
The heavy door groaned open, spilling her into total darkness. She flicked her phone’s flashlight on, its narrow beam cutting through floating motes of dust. Expecting crates of old furniture or seasonal holiday decor, Clara froze. The vast concrete floor was nearly empty, save for a dozen climate-controlled glass cases lined along the far brick wall. Inside were not antiques, but thick, leather-bound ledgers and row upon row of encrypted server blades blinking silent amber warnings.
She approached the nearest workstation, the sound of her heels echoing off the metal rafters. On top of the desk lay a file folder stamped with the family’s crest. Clara flipped it open, her hazel eyes scanning the documents beneath the white glow of her phone.
Her heart dropped.
They weren't just real estate deeds. They were shell corporations—dozens of them, bearing signatures from Julian, Evelyn, and… Clara herself. Page after page revealed millions of dollars in untaxed capital funneled through offshore accounts, with her forged signature occupying the guarantor line. If the authorities raided these servers tomorrow, Julian and his mother would walk away clean while Clara took the fall for grand larceny and wire fraud.
""He wasn't threatening divorce to teach me a lesson,"" she whispered into the darkness, the horror washing over her in freezing waves. ""He wanted me compliant so I’d stay until the audit cleared.""

Suddenly, the mechanical groan of an automated garage door broke the silence from the far end of the warehouse.
Headlights sliced through the gloom, blinding her as a sleek black SUV rolled slowly up the concrete ramp, blocking the only exit.
