Chapter 13 - Ashes of the Empire

The shockwave threw Clara against the far wall, knocking the wind from her lungs. Thick black smoke poured out of the ruptured elevator shaft, blinding and suffocating.
Through the haze, Clara coughed violently, dragging her sleeve over her mouth and nose. The concrete ceiling of the 35th floor was cracking, plaster falling in heavy chunks. The building’s structural integrity was failing; the explosion on the ground level had compromised the core support columns.
""Evelyn!"" Clara called out despite herself, crawling through the blinding smoke toward the landing.
The older woman was nowhere to be seen. In the chaos of the collapse, Evelyn had crawled back into the burning hallway of the 35th floor, driven by sheer madness toward the private family vault located in the corporate boardroom. She was frantically clutching a silver briefcase, her clothes blackened with soot, trying desperately to salvage bearer bonds while the ceiling caved in around her.
""Leave it!"" Clara screamed, lunging through the smoke to grab the older woman’s arm. ""The whole floor is coming down!""
""No! This is everything!"" Evelyn shrieked, fighting Clara off with feral strength. ""Without this, we are nothing! I won't go to prison a pauper!""
A massive steel support girder groaned overhead, buckling under thousands of tons of pressure. Clara saw the rivets popping like gunshots along the ceiling seam. She had two seconds to make a choice.
She let go.
Clara dove backward into the reinforced stairwell just as the ceiling above the boardroom collapsed in a cascade of twisted metal, burning insulation, and crushing concrete. Evelyn’s final scream was swallowed instantly by the roar of the cave-in.
Clara lay on the landing, coughing up grey ash, her vision swimming. The hallway was completely blocked by tons of burning rubble.
Footsteps pounded up the stairs below her. Flashlights cut through the smoke, followed by the heavy tactical gear of an FBI SWAT unit.
""Target secured! We have the civilian!"" a deep voice shouted over the tactical radio. Strong hands lifted Clara from the debris, wrapping a thermal blanket around her shoulders and fitting an oxygen mask over her face.
As they carried her down the emergency stairs toward the street, Clara caught a glimpse of Marcus, pinned beneath a fallen door frame, being handcuffed and dragged out by two federal officers. He caught her eye through the soot, giving her a slow, begrudging nod—the acknowledgement of a survivor who had recognized a superior predator.
When they burst through the ground-floor exit into the cold autumn night, the scene looked like a war zone.
Dozens of emergency vehicles lit up the Manhattan night in flashing reds and blues. Media vans were already lined along the perimeter, cameras flashing furiously. Across the cordon, sitting in the back of an armored federal transport with his head in his hands, was Julian.
He looked up as Clara was led out by the paramedics. Their eyes met across the barricades.
Julian’s face was pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror, disbelief, and sudden, pathetic remorse. He mouthed her name through the reinforced glass of the police van, pressing his cuffed hands against the window.
Clara paused by the back of the ambulance. She didn't look angry. She didn't look triumphant.

She simply turned her back on him, sat on the edge of the ambulance bumper, and let the paramedic treat the cuts on her hands.
The St. Clair empire was ash. But as she watched the smoke billow into the night sky, a heavy black sedan with tinted windows pulled up quietly at the edge of the media cordon. A man in a dark suit stepped out, holding a familiar manila folder stamped with her father's private seal.
