THE TASTE OF SHATTERED GLASS / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Julian choked on his scotch, coughing violently as he spun around. The glass slipped from his fingers, shattering across the Persian rug in a pathetic echo of the wine bottle he had broken hours earlier.

Evelyn gasped, rising to her feet so fast her pearls swung wildly against her chest. ""Clara?! What... how are you here?""

Clara walked calmly to the center of the office, tossing the thick leather ledger onto the desk between them. It landed with a heavy, authoritative thud.

""Marcus won't be joining the party tonight,"" Clara said, her voice smooth and devoid of any emotion. ""He’s currently tied to the balcony of your 5th Avenue apartment, waiting for the police to rescue him before he freezes to death.""

Julian’s face flushed from shock to blinding rage. The veins in his temples bulged, his handsome features contorting into an ugly, desperate mask. ""You stupid bitch. You think you can waltz in here and play detective? You're an accomplice! Victoria logged your signature into the federal transfer logs ten minutes ago! You're already a wanted felon!""

""Am I?"" Clara pulled a slim digital tablet from under her coat, sliding it across the polished wood.

The screen displayed a live streaming feed from the St. Clair Antiquities warehouse. On camera, two dozen federal agents from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network were systematically tagging the server racks, confiscating hard drives, and detaining Victoria Vance in handcuffs.

""I didn't call the local precinct, Julian,"" Clara continued, stepping closer until she was barely two feet from him. ""I contacted the federal prosecutor handling the maritime racketeering investigation your father narrowly escaped ten years ago. I forwarded them the full backup of the warehouse servers—complete with the unedited audit showing you and Victoria forging my digital key three weeks prior.""

Evelyn’s legs buckled. She collapsed back into the leather chair, her face turning an ashen grey. ""Julian... tell me this is a joke. Tell me she’s bluffing!""

""She's lying!"" Julian yelled, lunging forward to grab Clara’s throat.

Clara didn't flinch. She didn't retreat.

Before his hands could reach her collar, two plainclothes federal agents stepped through the office's private executive entrance behind the bookcase, their service weapons drawn and leveled at his chest.

""Step back, Mr. St. Clair,"" the lead agent commanded. ""Keep your hands where we can see them.""

Julian froze, his arms suspended in mid-air, trembling with impotent fury. He looked between the agents, his mother, and Clara, the realization crashing down on him like a collapsing ceiling.

""You planned this,"" Julian breathed, his voice cracking. ""From the very second that bottle broke on the floor.""

""No, Julian,"" Clara replied softly, looking into his hollow eyes. ""You planned the crime. I just made sure you paid the invoice.""

As the agents pushed Julian against his desk to cuff his hands, the second agent turned to Evelyn. But before the woman could even speak, the telephone on the desk rang.

The agent answered it, listened for five seconds, and glanced at Clara with a grim expression. ""Mrs. St. Clair... you need to see this. Marcus didn't wait for us.""
