Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Predator

The corporate headquarters of St. Clair Global occupied the top three floors of the midtown financial tower. At 11:30 PM, the glass-and-steel monolith was practically deserted, illuminated only by perimeter security lights and the occasional sweep of a janitor’s cart.
Clara stood in the mirrored elevator, watching her reflection rise floor by floor. She had swapped her torn tweed dress for a spare dark wool trench coat and tailored slacks she kept in her car trunk. In her hands, she carried the black leather folder from the docks, along with Marcus's encrypted master keycard.
Julian’s family had spent three years treating her like an ornamental nuisance—a middle-class girl out of her depth in their empire of inherited wealth. Julian had married her because her family owned the historic parcel of land his firm desperately needed for their downtown port expansion. Once her father died and the deed transferred to Clara, her usefulness had expired.
The elevator chimed, the doors sliding open directly into the mahogany-paneled executive suite.
Down the carpeted corridor, the double doors to the corner office were ajar. A warm amber glow spilled onto the hallway floor, accompanied by the clinking of crystal tumblers and the low, celebratory murmur of voices.
Clara walked softly, pausing just outside the frame of the door.
Julian was leaning against his massive mahogany desk, casually tossing an ice cube into an empty glass. Evelyn sat in a leather wingback chair by the window, swirling scotch with an expression of pure, unadulterated satisfaction.
""It’s almost poetic,"" Evelyn said, her voice dripping with smooth condescension. ""The poor girl couldn't bear the shame of failing you. That’s how Victoria will spin it to the press. A fragile young woman breaking under marital discord.""
""The board won't ask questions,"" Julian sneered, raising his glass in a mock salute toward his mother. ""Tomorrow morning, the twenty million clears the Cayman ledger, the land deed defaults to me as her sole heir, and by next quarter, St. Clair Global will be untouchable.""
""And what about that little stunt with the wine bottle?"" Evelyn asked with a dry chuckle. ""A bit rough, wasn't it?""
""It worked, didn't it?"" Julian laughed, taking a long sip. ""It kept her eyes on the floor and her head down until Marcus could finish the job. She was nothing, Mother. A stepping stone.""

Clara stepped into the room, her voice slicing through the warm silence like a scalpel.
""A stepping stone who happens to have your offshore routing numbers, Julian.""
