Chapter 11 - The Language of Broken Things

Over the next two weeks, Damian stayed at a small, unpretentious bed-and-breakfast down the coast. Every morning, he walked to the workshop. He did not interfere with Clara’s work; he helped stack lumber, clean paint brushes, and sweep sawdust from the floors.

The children at the workshop, initially intimidated by his stature, quickly discovered that the giant in the woolen sweater was exceptionally good at reaching high storage shelves and cutting heavy cardboard into miniature castles.

One afternoon, while Lily was busy inside sculpting clay figures with other children, Clara joined Damian on the back porch overlooking the water.

""You look out of place,"" Clara said with a faint smile, leaning against the wooden railing. ""A multi-billionaire sweeping cedar shavings.""

""I haven't felt this useful in ten years,"" Damian replied, leaning the broom against the wall. ""In New York, I spent fourteen hours a day signing documents that moved numbers from one screen to another. None of it felt real.""

""It felt real when Eleanor was running it,"" Clara noted quietly.

Damian looked out toward the horizon where small fishing boats bobbed in the distance. ""I spent my whole life trying to earn my father’s approval, and after he died, trying to keep my mother from destroying everything he left. I thought duty was enduring misery without flinching.""

""And what do you think duty is now?""

Damian turned to her, his gaze intense, completely sincere. ""Duty is protecting the things that make us human. It's making sure our daughter grows up knowing that kindness isn't weakness.""

Clara looked away, her hands tightening around the railing. ""We can't just pretend the last three years didn't happen, Damian. There is too much pain between us. Too many nights I cried myself to sleep wondering if you even remembered my face.""

""I don't expect you to forget,"" Damian said gently, taking a step toward her, but keeping a respectful distance. ""I'm not asking for my wife back today, Clara. I’m asking for the chance to be a father who earns his place at your table.""
