Chapter 2 - The Severed Cord

Eleanor’s voice transformed from aristocratic arrogance into shrill disbelief. ""You dare? In my own home? Your father built this house on my family's fortune!""

""My father built a cage, and you spent thirty years polishing the bars,"" Damian replied quietly. He gave a nod to Marcus. ""Escort Mrs. Sterling to her suite. She has two hours to gather personal jewelry and clothing. No company documents. No family heirlooms. Her access codes to the executive levels are already revoked.""

""You need me, Damian! The board will never ratify the green-energy merger without the Van Der Bilt trust!"" Eleanor hissed, struggling against the unyielding grip of the guards. ""Clara ruined you. She made you soft. A man who runs an international logistics conglomerate does not play savior over handmade sneakers!""

Lily clung to Damian’s trouser leg, her small fingers burrowing into the dark wool. Damian placed his large palm over her head, shielding her sightline as Eleanor was led down the western corridor. Her furious protests grew fainter until the heavy mahogany doors swung shut, sealing her away.

Silence descended upon the grand hallway, but it was no longer the suffocating silence of oppression; it was the quiet that follows a detonated blast.

Damian scooped Lily up into his arms. The box sat tucked against her chest like a sacred relic. Inside lay a pair of white canvas shoes, meticulously embroidered with tiny yellow buttercups along the seams—Clara’s signature flower. On the tongue of the right shoe, stitched in uneven, loving blue thread, were the words: Walk bravely, my darling.

""Daddy?"" Lily snuffled, burying her nose into the crook of his neck. ""Are you mad at Mommy too?""

""Never,"" Damian said, his voice cracking for the first time in years. ""Not for a single second, Lily-bug.""

""Grandma said Mommy left because we were too important for her.""

Damian stopped at the base of the winding spiral staircase. Pain, sharp and raw, pierced through his stoic composure. ""Your mother didn't leave because she didn't love you, Lily. She left because I was too weak to protect her from the poison in this house. But that ends today.""
