Chapter 3 - An Unwanted Legacy

Later that evening, Damian sat in his sprawling, wood-paneled study on the top floor of the Sterling estate. Outside the French windows, the autumn rain slashed against the glass, blurring the manicured gardens below. On his desk lay two items: the leather-bound ledger of Sterling Industries and a plain manila envelope stamped with the logo of a modest law office in upstate New York.

The door knocked softly. Jonathan, Damian’s personal assistant and the only man in the company who remembered Damian before he became a ruthless corporate titan, entered with a fresh pot of black coffee.

""Eleanor has left the premises, sir,"" Jonathan reported. ""She has checked into the St. Regis downtown. Her legal counsel has already filed three formal complaints and requested an emergency board hearing for Monday morning.""

""Let them file,"" Damian said without looking up. ""Let her spend her retainers. What about Clara?""

Jonathan hesitated, setting the cup down on a coaster. ""The private investigators traced the package’s origin. The shoes weren't mailed from an agency or a third-party intermediary. Clara delivered them herself to the gatehouse yesterday evening. She didn't stay. She’s living in a small coastal town three hours north. She runs a community arts and rehabilitation workshop for underprivileged kids.""

Damian closed his eyes. The memory of Clara was vivid: her sun-dappled hair, her hands smelling of lavender soap and chalk, her stubborn refusal to bend to Eleanor’s petty social hierarchies. Three years ago, Eleanor had manufactured an insidious scandal, framing Clara for embezzling charity funds from the Sterling Foundation. Clara, proud and unwilling to drag a newborn Lily through the mud of public litigation, had agreed to vanish on one condition: that Damian protect their daughter’s safety and emotional health.

Damian had believed he was shielding them both by taking full custody while fighting the legal wolves. In reality, he had allowed Eleanor to isolate Lily in a gilded prison.

""She kept her promise,"" Damian murmured. ""Every birthday. Every milestone. A quiet gift, sent into the void, hoping it wouldn't be burned.""

""Sir,"" Jonathan said gently, ""Eleanor is reaching out to the old board members. She intends to invoke the morality clause in the trust agreement. She will claim you are mentally unfit to govern, using your eviction of her as evidence of erratic instability.""

""She thinks money is power,"" Damian replied, standing up and buttoning his waistcoat. ""She has forgotten that money without purpose is just cold iron. Prepare the car for tomorrow morning. Lily and I are taking a trip.""
