Chapter 14 - Returning to the Light

Two weeks before Christmas, the first gentle snowfall dusted the cedar shingles of Heron Bay. The small coastal town was transformed into a quiet, white sanctuary, the ocean waves lapping softly against the frosty shore.

Damian walked down the gravel lane toward Clara’s cottage, carrying a large wooden crate. Inside were not luxury goods from Fifth Avenue, but dozens of art supplies, high-grade clay, sketchbooks, and sets of fine carving tools for the children at the community workshop.

When he knocked, Clara opened the door. She was wearing a thick cable-knit sweater, her cheeks flushed with the warmth of the woodstove inside. The smell of cinnamon and baked apples drifted into the crisp air.

""You brought enough supplies to furnish an entire art academy,"" Clara said, a genuine, warm smile breaking across her face.

""Jonathan got enthusiastic,"" Damian replied with a quiet grin, setting the crate down on the porch. ""He insisted that our foundation’s new budget allocate for the best materials.""

""Come inside out of the cold,"" she said, stepping back to let him enter.

Inside, Lily was sitting by the Christmas tree—a modest, slightly crooked pine tree they had cut down together from a local farm the weekend before. Hanging from the lower branches were dozens of handmade paper ornaments Lily had painted, alongside tiny yellow felt buttercups Clara had sewn.

Lily looked up, her face glowing with pure joy. ""Daddy! Look! The tree is finished!""

Damian took off his coat and knelt beside her. He looked at the modest, beautiful tree, then at Clara, who was pouring two mugs of hot cider at the counter.

There was no marble here. No cold, echoing corridors. No portraits of dead patriarchs judging their worth by their net balance. There was only the gentle pop of wood in the hearth, the smell of pine, and the soft laughter of his daughter.

""It’s the most beautiful tree I’ve ever seen, Lily,"" Damian said. And for the first time in his adult life, he meant it with every fiber of his being.
