Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Guillotine

The boardroom on the 48th floor was lined with rich mahogany and portraits of stern, dead men who had prioritized balance sheets over humanity. Eleanor Sterling sat at the head of the conference table, resplendent in tailored grey houndstooth, a pearl choker wrapped tightly around her neck. Around her sat twelve men and women whose collective net worth controlled half of the city's commercial infrastructure.

When the double doors opened, Damian walked in alone. He carried no briefcase, only a dark leather folder.

""Ah, the disgraced CEO honors us with his presence,"" Eleanor declared, her voice ringing with rehearsed theatricality. ""Members of the board, as you know from my memorandum, my son has succumbed to stress and erratic behavior. He has compromised our personal safety and disgraced our heritage. Under section twelve of the bylaws, I move for an immediate vote of no confidence.""

""Seconded,"" Arthur Pendelton muttered, adjusting his spectacles. ""Damian, this behavior is untenable. A public spectacle cannot be tolerated.""

Damian didn't take his seat. He remained standing at the foot of the long table, looking around at the gathered faces.

""Before you vote,"" Damian said, his voice deep, quiet, and carrying an absolute authority that made several directors shift uncomfortably, ""I suggest you open the brown envelopes in front of you.""

Eleanor smiled disdainfully. ""More desperate corporate maneuvers, Damian? Deflection won't save you.""

""Open them, Arthur,"" Damian directed.

Pendelton untied the red string and slid the contents out. As his eyes scanned the first three pages, the color drained entirely from his face. Other directors began opening theirs. Murmurs broke out, growing in volume until the room buzzed with shock.

""What is this nonsense?"" Eleanor demanded, grabbing Pendelton’s folder.

""Those,"" Damian said, ""are the forensic accounting reports from the Sterling Pediatric Foundation between 2022 and 2024. They document forty-two separate wire transfers authorized solely through Mrs. Eleanor Sterling’s private signature key, routed through shell corporations in Panama to settle the bad debts of Van Der Bilt Holdings.""

""This is fabricated!"" Eleanor shrieked, slamming the folder down. ""Lies! Slander from that gutter-born nurse!""

""The digital audit trail was certified this morning by the Securities and Exchange Commission,"" Damian stated without an ounce of pity. ""Clara never took a dime. You framed a young mother, destroyed her name, and banished her so you could cover your family’s insolvency. You used this corporation as your personal shield. But worse than that... you made a child believe she was unloved.""

Two federal marshals, accompanied by the building’s compliance officers, stepped into the boardroom from the rear entrance.

Eleanor looked around the table, searching for an ally, a friend, a face from her thirty years of high-society dominance. Every single director averted their eyes.
