Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Foundation

The room fell into an icy stillness. Elena’s hand froze within Leo’s tiny grasp.

""My mother?"" she whispered, her voice trembling with disbelief. ""They told me her heart failed in the waiting room while I was in surgery.""

""Her heart was fine,"" Julian said, his eyes darkening with suppressed rage. ""She overheard Marcus's men speaking with the attending physician. She managed to slip away for forty minutes before returning to the hospital. When they realized she knew about the forged death certificates, they administered an overdose of potassium chloride. It looked like cardiac arrest.""

A cold rage, deeper and more terrifying than anything she had ever felt, crystallized in Elena’s chest. For months, she had carried the crushing guilt that the stress of her pregnancy had killed her mother. Now, the truth stripped away the sorrow, leaving only a sharp, vengeful clarity.

""What did she hide?"" Elena demanded, stepping toward Julian.

""A ledger. And an encrypted USB drive that belonged to my father,"" Julian replied, leaning forward against the pain in his shoulder. ""My father knew Marcus was funneling cartel money through the Vance shipping terminals. He gave the records to your mother for safekeeping because nobody would suspect an elderly retired librarian.""

""The apartment was demolished four months ago,"" Elena said, her voice dropping. ""I saw the news. Marcus bought the entire block for commercial redevelopment.""

""The building was razed, yes,"" Julian said, pulling a worn, tarnished brass key from his pocket and placing it on the low table between them. ""But your mother rented a private storage locker beneath the old subway concourse across the street. The key was inside her personal effects, which I intercepted from the coroner's office.""

Suddenly, the outside floodlights of the cabin flickered once, twice, and went dead.

Elena snapped her head toward the window. Out on the black surface of the lake, the faint rumble of an outboard motor cut through the night air.

Julian was on his feet instantly, drawing a weapon from his waistband, his earlier exhaustion vanishing behind pure survival instinct. ""They tracked the sedan's transponder. We have less than two minutes.""
