Chapter 9 - The Freightline Shadow

Elena froze, but Julian did not flinch. Instead, he straightened his spine, using every ounce of his remaining strength to project authority.

""Call off your light, Thomas,"" Julian commanded, his voice steady despite the blood running down his sleeve. ""Unless you've forgotten whose father built the depot you're standing on.""

The flashlight beam dipped instantly, illuminating a weathered older man in oil-stained overalls and a heavy canvas coat. The man lowered an old shotgun, his jaw dropping in disbelief.

""Mr. Julian?"" Thomas stepped out of the shadow of a boxcar, his eyes wide. ""The radio... the late-night broadcasts said you were abducted by an armed woman. They have your face on every local news affiliate.""

""Marcus controls the narrative, Thomas,"" Julian said, leaning heavily against a steel stanchion. ""This is Elena. And this is my son, Leo. We need a sealed container on the 4:15 manifest heading west toward the capital.""

Thomas looked from Julian’s bloody shoulder to Elena, who stood with her chin lifted, her arms shielding the infant against the biting wind. The old railway foreman spit onto the gravel and shook his head.

""Your father kept my boy out of prison after an industrial accident fifteen years ago,"" Thomas said gruffly. ""The Vance name used to mean something in this valley before Marcus brought in his private military goons. Follow me.""

He led them swiftly along the gravel tracks to an unmarked refrigerated car connected to a massive diesel engine. Using a heavy crowbar, Thomas broke the security seal and rolled the heavy steel door open just enough for them to squeeze through.

Inside, the car was dry, insulated, and filled with wooden pallets stacked with dry grain sacks. It was completely dark, save for the faint glow from the yard lamps outside.

""Manifest says this car doesn't get uncoupled until the Central Freight Terminal in the capital,"" Thomas said, handing Julian a heavy wool blanket and a thermos of black coffee. ""Eight hours non-stop. Once you hit the terminal, you're on your own.""

""Thank you, old friend,"" Julian said, clasping the man's rough hand.

Thomas slid the heavy door shut, leaving them in near-pitch darkness. The heavy locking bar dropped outside with a final, resonant clang.

Minutes later, the massive diesel engines roared to life with a bone-rattling vibration. The train lurched forward, slowly gathering speed as it carried them away from the valley.

Elena sank onto a pile of burlap sacks, her muscles trembling with exhaustion. Julian sat beside her, wrapping the heavy blanket around all three of them. In the quiet, rhythmic clatter of the train tracks, Elena pulled down her jacket collar.

Leo reached out, his tiny, warm fingers brushing against Julian’s bearded cheek. Julian let out a choked breath, tears finally spilling over his lashes as he kissed the baby’s forehead, then leaned his head against Elena’s shoulder.

""We're going to finish this,"" Elena whispered, her fingers intertwining with Julian’s cold hand.

Julian didn't answer. His breathing had grown dangerously shallow, his head slumping heavily against her neck. When Elena touched his face, his skin was burning hot, and he was completely unresponsive.
