Chapter 8 - The Scent of Pine and Copper

The river was a wild, churning beast that dragged them through the gorge with terrifying velocity. Cold spray drenched Elena to the bone, but she kept Leo pressed firmly beneath her wool coat, using her own body heat to shield him from the freezing water.
Julian worked the single wooden oar with agonizing effort, using his good arm to steer the craft away from jagged boulders that jutted out of the frothing black water.
After half an hour of terrifying descent, the violent rapids widened into a placid, marshy delta. Julian guided the nose of the boat into a thick patch of reeds along the shore. The hull scraped against gravel and came to a halt.
Julian collapsed forward across the bench, his forehead resting against the damp wood, his breath coming in wheezing gasps.
Elena crept forward, placing a hand on his back. His suit jacket was ruined, caked in mud and river water, and the bandage beneath his shirt was dark and sticky once more. ""Julian... can you stand?""
""I have to,"" he muttered, forcing himself upright. His face was chalk-white in the moonlight. ""We're four miles from the old rail yard. Marcus doesn't own the industrial transit lines. My father had friends in freight.""
Elena stepped out into knee-deep, freezing mud, holding Leo tightly. The baby was surprisingly quiet now, worn out from crying, his hazel eyes wide as he gazed up at the canopy of dark branches overhead.
They climbed the muddy embankment to an abandoned service road. In the distance, the yellow sodium lights of a freight switching yard cast an eerie amber haze against the clouds.
Julian stumbled, his shoulder clipping an old rusted guardrail. Elena caught him around the waist, taking half his weight onto her smaller frame.
""Why didn't you run, Julian?"" she asked quietly, her breath clouding in the freezing air. ""Seven months ago... when you woke up from the coma. You could have fled the country. You had offshore accounts. You could have started over.""
Julian turned his head slowly, his eyes locking onto hers with a raw, unshielded honesty that made her chest ache.
""Because an empire without you and the boy is just a gilded cage,"" he said softly. ""I built that company with my father. But I built my soul with you. I couldn't live in the light knowing you were in the dark.""
Elena swallowed the lump in her throat, tightening her arm around his waist as they pushed toward the rail yard.

They slipped through a gap in the chain-link fence, approaching a long line of idling diesel locomotives. As they approached the maintenance shed, the beam of a flashlight caught them dead in their tracks.
""Step forward with your hands where I can see them,"" an unfamiliar, harsh voice barked from the shadows.
