Chapter 1 - The Bargain of Shadows

Elena stood rooted to the hardwood floor, the fabric of her pale blue maternity gown clinging damply to her skin. Her hands trembled as they rested over the heavy curve of her swollen stomach. Opposite her, holding a newborn child with an almost clinical precision, was Mara. Mara’s tailored black high-collared dress gave her the air of a mourning monarch.
“Leander doesn’t weep for discarded things,” Elena whispered, her voice rough from hours of quiet despair. “He discards them, forgets them, and rebuilds his empire over their dust. You know that better than anyone, Mara.”
Mara looked down at the infant swaddled in cream linen. The infant was Leander’s legitimate heir, born to his late wife, who had vanished beneath the waters of Lake Constance under murky circumstances. Elena was the mistress who had believed in soft promises, only to be cast into this secluded country estate once her belly swelled too prominently for public comfort.
“He will weep because I will teach him the price of absence,” Mara answered, her dark eyes unblinking. Her hand lightly touched the scratch on her wrist—a fresh mark from the chaotic nursery transfer an hour prior. “You think he took everything from you, Elena. But he took my youth, my brother’s life, and now he intends to turn this child into another version of himself.”
“And what am I to you? A pawn?” Elena questioned, stepping forward.
“A collaborator,” Mara corrected softly. “You want your child to have a father who isn’t a tyrant. I want Leander brought low enough to realize human souls aren't currency. Give me thirty days. When the month ends, he will crawl to this threshold, stripped of his pride, begging for your pardon.”
Elena looked into the baby’s sleeping face. “And if you destroy us all instead?”
May you like
“Then at least you will die knowing you didn’t wait meekly for his slaughter,” Mara said.
Elena exhaled, the bitterness in her throat tasting like copper. “One month. Not a day more.”
