Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in the Woods

The mountain cabin smelled of dry cedar, dried lavender, and old woodsmoke. It sat high above the tree line, far beyond the reach of cellular networks and highway cameras. It belonged to Mara’s deceased father, a master carpenter whose life had ended when Leander’s construction firm bypassed safety regulations twenty years ago.

Elena sat near the small cast-iron stove, her fingers knitting a rough woolen blanket. Her contractions had not begun, but her body ached with a deep, bone-weary fatigue. Nearby, in a carved wooden crib, little Julian slept soundly, fed and warm.

Mara moved through the small kitchen with measured economy, chopping roots for broth.

“He will find this place,” Elena warned, watching the way Mara’s knife struck the cutting board with rhythmic precision. “Leander has men who do nothing but hunt secrets.”

“He knows this valley only as a line on an acquisition map he signed off on without looking,” Mara replied without turning around. “Men like Leander don’t see land; they see square footage. He never knew my father’s name. He only knew the labor costs.”

“Why are you raising his boy with such tenderness if you hate the father?” Elena asked.

Mara paused. Her knife hovered above the leeks. “Because a child is an unwritten page, Elena. If I treat this boy with the cruelty Leander showed my family, then Leander has won without ever firing a shot. He would have turned me into him.”

Elena looked at her own swollen stomach, feeling the child within kick against her ribs. “I loved him once. That is the sickness I can’t scrub out. Even now, part of me waits for him to explain it away—to tell me it was all necessary.”

“He will come,” Mara said, her voice turning cold again. “Not out of love, but out of ownership. And when he comes, we will not run.”
