Chapter 11 - The Unmasking

Leander stopped. His eyes swept across the room—from Keller’s bloody fingers to Elena’s half-conscious form. The scent of birth and blood was thick, suffocatingly real, breaking through the sterile detachment he had cultivated for decades.
“Elena,” Leander murmured, his gun hand lowering slightly.
Elena raised her head with immense effort. Her eyes, sunken and shadowed, held no fear, only an infinite, bottomless pity that cut Leander deeper than any bullet could have.
“You came to kill us,” Elena whispered, her voice barely carrying over the crackle of the hearth. “You brought weapons... to kill your own daughter.”
Leander blinked, his gaze dropping to the infant in Mara’s arms. “Daughter?”
“A girl,” Mara said, her voice dripping with venomous clarity. “Born while your mercenaries were shooting through the glass. She has your mother’s chin, Leander. And she will grow up knowing that her father traded her life for the silence of a boardroom.”
Leander turned to the contractor standing beside him. “I told you... I told you no harm to the family!”

“You said secure the property and eliminate the liabilities, sir,” the contractor answered smoothly, his weapon remaining trained on Mara. “Our contract is with the corporation, not your conscience. Step aside, Mr. Vance. Let us finish the work you paid us for.”
In that moment, the sterile machinery Leander had built turned its teeth toward its creator. He was no longer the master; he was merely an obstacle between paid killers and their targets.
