Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By the fourteenth day, winter had descended early upon the mountains, choking the high passes with wet, heavy snow. Inside the cabin, the isolation had transformed the dynamic between the two women.

Elena’s labor was nearing. Her ankles had swollen, and she spent long hours resting by the hearth, listening to Mara tell stories of her childhood—of a father who built wooden toys and a mother who taught her how to recognize medicinal herbs along the riverbanks.

“My mother used to say that anger is a fire that warms you for a night, but burns your own house down by dawn,” Mara said, checking the baby’s temperature with the back of her fingers. Julian cooed, reaching his tiny, soft hands toward the firelight.

“You don’t seem like someone who wants to burn down houses,” Elena observed quietly.

“I didn't use to be,” Mara replied, her gaze distant. “When my brother took his own life after Leander’s firm bankrupted his subcontracting business, I thought vengeance was the only honorable thing left. I took the job as Leander’s house manager with the sole intent of poisoning his wine when the time was right.”

Elena gasped softly, pulling her shawl tighter around her shoulders. “Why didn't you?”

“Because I saw how small he was,” Mara said, turning to look at Elena. “A man who must terrify everyone around him to feel safe is already living in a cage. Poisoning him would have freed him. He needs to see the cage door close with him inside it.”

Suddenly, the wind outside howled down the chimney, carrying with it the faint, mechanical hum of an engine struggling up the icy access road. Mara’s posture hardened instantly. She reached behind the door, lifting a heavy iron fire poker.

“He is here earlier than I thought,” Mara murmured.
