Chapter 14 - The Embers Fade

When the medical helicopters arrived at dawn, summoned by Keller’s emergency beacon, the high mountain valley was bathed in a clear, crystalline gold light.

Leander Vance did not die. Modern surgery and private clinics stitched his shattered organs back together, but they could not repair the ruin of his name. As he lay chained to a hospital bed under federal custody, the evidence Mara had systematically gathered dismantled his corporate empire piece by piece.

He signed every confession without protest. He signed away his trusts, his properties, his holdings, and his rights, asking only for a single photograph of his children—a request that the courts, in their cold efficiency, granted.

Two months later, the mountain cabin had been cleared of its ghosts.

Mara stood on the porch, watching the spring runoff trickle down the rocky slopes. The snow was melting, revealing patches of green alpine grass beneath the frost. Behind her, Elena was sitting in a rocking chair, nursing her daughter, whom she had named Clara—meaning light. Julian played on a braided rug near her feet, stacking small wooden blocks that had once belonged to Mara’s father.

“The legal papers arrived this morning,” Mara said, turning around with a manila envelope in her hands. “The restitution fund has been finalized. You and the children will never want for anything. The estate in Zurich is yours, free and clear.”

Elena looked down at Clara, whose small hands rested against her breast. “I don't want the estate in Zurich. Too many shadows live in those high ceilings.”

“Then where will you go?” Mara asked.

“Here,” Elena said softly, looking up at the high timber beams. “Or somewhere like this. Where a child can grow up hearing the wind instead of the sound of people calculating each other's worth.”
