Chapter 15 - The New Sunrise

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the high arched windows of the Vance estate's grand dining room. The damaged walls had been repaired, the broken glass replaced, and the cold, oppressive shadows of the past had finally burned away.
Alexander stood by the polished mahogany table, dressed in a comfortable linen shirt with his sleeves rolled up, watching Lily giggle as she chased a set of newly carved wooden blocks across the thick Persian rug.
Clara entered the room carrying a silver tray with fresh tea and sliced fruit. She wore a simple cream-colored dress, her hair falling softly past her shoulders. The bruises on her temple had faded to faint silver marks.
""The federal prosecutor just called,"" Clara said, setting the tray down. ""Julian’s plea deal was rejected. He's facing three life sentences without parole for corporate treason and capital murder.""
Alexander nodded slowly, stepping toward her. ""And the Valmont trust?""
""Fully secured under Lily’s name,"" Clara replied, looking down at the baby. ""Placed in an irrevocable trust until she turns twenty-five. No one can ever touch it. Her future is safe.""
Alexander looked into Clara’s amber eyes. The guarded, lethal operative who had infiltrated his home was gone, replaced by the woman who had walked through fire and ocean to save his daughter's life.
""And your future, Clara?"" Alexander asked quietly.
Clara paused, looking toward the open terrace overlooking the calm Atlantic. ""I spent ten years running and five years fighting. I don't know what it feels like to just... stay.""
Alexander reached out, his hand gently covering hers on the table. She didn't pull away.
""You don't have to be a maid, and you don't have to be a bodyguard,"" Alexander said softly, his dark eyes filled with a rare, open vulnerability. ""This house was an empty tomb until you walked in. Lily needs you. And... so do I.""
Clara looked at their joined hands, then up at Alexander, a genuine, warm smile touching her lips for the first time.
At their feet, Lily knocked over her wooden blocks, holding up the carved rabbit and making a soft, babbling sound of pure joy.
Alexander reached into his pocket and placed an envelope on the table.
Clara glanced down at it. ""What is this?""
May you like
Alexander’s expression shifted, the softness vanishing from his eyes, replaced by sudden, razor-sharp tension.
""Julian had a silent partner,"" Alexander whispered, his voice dropping low. ""The envelope arrived five minutes ago by courier. It’s Eleanor's handwriting, dated yesterday."""
