Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Vault

The safe in Alexander’s sub-basement required dual biometric clearance: retinal scans and palm prints that only the head of Vance Industries could authorize. In the bunker below the foundation, the hum of computer servers drowned out the thunder from above.
Alexander plugged the ceramic drive into an isolated terminal. Rows of encrypted spreadsheets and audio logs flooded the multi-monitor display.
""Eleanor spent her final two years tracking offshore shell companies,"" Clara explained, leaning over the console while Lily slept in a portable crib nearby. ""She discovered that Thorne Syndicate wasn't just laundering dirty cartel cash. They were acquiring majority shares in Vance Industries through proxy corporations.""
Alexander felt cold fury boil in his veins. ""A hostile takeover from the inside.""
""Worse,"" Clara said, clicking an audio file.
A familiar voice crackled through the speakers—Eleanor’s voice, strained and frantic, recorded just hours before her death: Alexander, if you hear this, run with Lily. It isn’t just business. Julian Thorne wants Lily’s bloodline. Our biological mother was the last sole inheritor of the Valmont trust in Zurich. If Lily survives past her first birthday, the Thorne empire loses control of eighty billion dollars.
Alexander froze. Lily’s first birthday was in precisely forty-eight hours.
""They don't want to kill her,"" Alexander realized, his voice trembling with horror. ""They want custody. They want to declare me unfit, eliminate me, and claim guardianship.""
""And Julian Thorne has already filed the petition,"" Clara added quietly, pointing to an encrypted court filing on the screen. ""A corrupt judge in the southern district signed the emergency custody order tonight, citing criminal negligence on your estate.""
Suddenly, the basement terminal flickered. The overhead fluorescent tubes buzzed loudly, then died entirely.
The bunker plunged into pitch darkness.
From the steel hatch fifty feet above, the grinding sound of hydraulic locks releasing echoed through the silence.
Alexander drew his weapon in the dark. ""Marcus? Report!""
May you like
A voice replied over the comms, but it wasn't Marcus. It was cold, smooth, and utterly devoid of mercy.
""Marcus has been relieved of duty, Alexander. Bring the child up, or we flood the ventilation with carbon monoxide.""
