Chapter 9 - Sins of the Past

The kerosene heater hissed in the damp silence. Alexander stared at Clara, his hand instinctively dropping toward his empty holster before remembering he had lost his sidearm in the sea caves.

""Julian took me from the foster home when I was fourteen,"" Clara said, her voice steady, stripping away every illusion. ""He trained me. He made me his shadow. When Eleanor ran away to marry you, Julian ordered me to put a bullet in her head.""

Alexander stepped forward, towering over her, his fists clenched tight. ""And you didn't?""

""I couldn't,"" Clara whispered, her eyes shining with tears she refused to shed. ""She was my sister. I faked her disappearance, staged a crime scene in Lisbon, and spent three years hunting down the dirt on Julian to buy her freedom. But Julian found her anyway. The night of the crash... I was five minutes too late. When I pulled her from the burning wreckage, she made me swear an oath on her dying breath.""

""To protect Lily,"" Alexander finished, his voice cracked with pain.

""To protect Lily from both of you,"" Clara said fiercely, meeting his gaze without backing down. ""From Julian’s greed, and from your blind corporate pride. You built a fortress of marble and money, Alexander, but you left your front door wide open to snakes.""

The raw honesty hit Alexander harder than a blow. He looked down at his daughter, sleeping peacefully under Clara’s jacket, completely unaware that her existence was the fulcrum upon which two massive dynasties balanced.

""You could have taken her and vanished,"" Alexander said quietly. ""With the Valmont trust drive, you could have lived anywhere in the world.""

""Eleanor loved you,"" Clara said softly, the edge leaving her voice. ""She said you were stubborn, arrogant, and cold... but that you would die before you let anyone hurt your family. She wanted Lily to know her father.""

A sudden hum vibrated through the concrete floor.

Alexander snapped his head toward the rusted iron door. The distant thump of helicopter blades was cutting through the fog, growing louder with terrifying speed.

A searchlight swept across the lighthouse windows, bathing the room in harsh, clinical white light.

Julian Thorne had found them.
