Chapter 4 - Bloodlines in the Dark

The study fell into suffocating silence, broken only by Lily’s soft, rhythmic breathing against Clara’s chest. Outside, thunder rattled the heavy leaded panes.
""Eleanor was an only child,"" Alexander said coldly, refusing to lower his weapon. ""Her parents died twenty years ago in a yacht fire off Monaco.""
""Her adoptive parents died,"" Clara corrected, unbuttoning her cuffs to reveal an intricate birthmark beneath her watch—a crescent-shaped pigmentation identical to the one Eleanor had carried on her left wrist. ""I was hidden in foster care under the Thorne witness protection deal before Eleanor was adopted into high society. We kept contact through encrypted mail until the day she crashed on the coastal highway.""
Alexander felt the ground tilt beneath him. For eight months, the official police report had ruled Eleanor’s death a tragic solo accident—brake failure during a storm. He had drowned himself in grief and corporate warfare, never looking deeper because looking deeper meant facing the unbearable truth that his enemies might have struck his home.
""Why hide it?"" Alexander demanded, motioning for Marcus to stay by the door. ""Why sneak in as an agency cleaner?""
""Because if you knew who I was, your pride would have ejected me from the gate,"" Clara answered, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. ""And because whoever tampered with Eleanor’s brakes still has an insider on your payroll. The man on the floor? Check his collar.""
Marcus knelt, ripping open the wounded guard’s shirt. Tucked inside the seam was a micro-transponder, blinking a faint blue light.
""He was tracking your safe room coordinates,"" Marcus muttered, his face pale.
Alexander stared at Clara, the gun slipping from his fingers onto the desk. The puzzle pieces were falling into place with terrifying speed.
""If Eleanor was murdered,"" Alexander whispered, ""what were they after?""

Clara reached into Lily’s carrier, withdrawing the small carved rabbit. With a firm twist of the figurine’s head, the bottom popped open, revealing a miniature ceramic drive.
""They want Eleanor's testimony,"" Clara said. ""And the timer on this drive has just begun counting down.""
