Chapter 8 - Stranded on Black Rock

The freezing drizzle stung their faces as the zodiac bobbed uselessly against the swell. Inside the craft, the bilge pump clicked weakly before dying, allowing an inch of black Atlantic water to slosh around their boots.
Alexander knelt by Clara, pulling off his wool jacket to drape it over her and the infant. Lily let out a faint, exhausted wail, her tiny lips turning slightly blue.
""She’s getting hypothermic,"" Clara whispered, pressing the baby tight against her bare collarbone to share her body heat. ""If we stay on this water for another hour, her organs will shut down.""
Alexander scanned the foggy horizon. Through the mist, less than half a mile away, rose the silhouette of Black Rock Shoal—an abandoned lighthouse station decommissioned in the 1970s.
""Take the emergency oars,"" Alexander ordered, ripping the aluminum paddles from the side brackets. ""We row.""
Every stroke through the churning swells sent agony through Alexander’s torn shoulder, but the sight of Clara shivering and protecting Lily pushed him past physical limits. Within twenty minutes, the hull scraped against the barnacle-crusted concrete pier of the abandoned lighthouse.
Alexander hoisted Clara onto the slippery ladder, then hauled himself up, leaving the dead boat to be swallowed by the tide.
Inside the rusted iron door of the tower, the wind ceased its deafening shriek. Alexander found an old emergency stash behind the generator housing: dry emergency flares, a kerosene heater with half a gallon of fuel, and a crate of military-grade ration bars.
Within minutes, a blue flame flickered to life in the heater, casting long, dancing shadows across the cylindrical concrete room. Clara knelt beside the heat, unwrapping Lily and checking her breathing. The baby sighed, warmth returning to her cheeks as she rested against Clara’s chest.
Alexander watched them, a strange, unfamiliar emotion tightening in his chest. In the midst of ruin, with his empire falling apart, this woman felt like an anchor.
""Why did Eleanor never tell me about you?"" Alexander asked softly, sitting opposite her against the cold wall. ""In five years of marriage, she never spoke your name.""
Clara looked into the blue flame, her voice quiet and haunted. ""Because she was terrified you would find out the truth about who I really worked for before she broke away.""
May you like
Alexander went rigid. ""Who did you work for, Clara?""
Clara looked up, her amber eyes reflecting the fire. ""I was Julian Thorne's personal assassin for five years.""
