Chapter 10 - Shadows of Doubt

Healing, however, was rarely linear. In January, Clara resumed her hospital shifts. The return to the emergency department was brutal—twelve-hour rotations surrounded by high-stakes trauma, followed by returning home to the relentless demands of an infant.
One evening, after losing an elderly patient on the operating table, Clara came home exhausted to the bone. The sink was piled with unwashed bottles, and the living room carpet was littered with burp cloths and discarded blankets. Maya was wailing uncontrollably in her crib.
James was sitting on the floor with his back against the couch, his face buried in his hands, completely paralyzed by sleep deprivation.
A sudden, irrational surge of resentment washed over Clara. “I worked fourteen hours today saving lives, James! Can’t you even wash the bottles before I get home?”
James lifted his head, startled and defensive. “I’ve been dealing with a plumbing leak in the basement and her fever spiked to 101 at noon! I haven't slept in thirty hours, Clara!”
“This wasn't my choice!” The words tore out of Clara’s throat before she could filter them.
The living room fell into sudden, suffocating silence. Even Maya seemed to quiet down upstairs, as if registering the sharp edge in the air.
James stood up slowly. His face had gone completely pale, the exhaustion in his eyes replaced by profound sorrow. “You’re right,” he whispered quietly. “It wasn't.”

Clara stood alone in the kitchen, listening to the ticking clock. A sickening coldness spread through her stomach. The words she had suppressed for months had finally surfaced, and their cruelty was undeniable.
