Chapter 6 - The Unopened Envelope

By the end of the first week, an uneasy routine formed in the household. Clara took emergency family leave from the hospital, ostensibly to help James handle an "unexpected family emergency." Neither of them contacted friends or extended family yet; the reality was still too volatile to narrate to outsiders.

On Thursday afternoon, while Maya slept in the crib they had hastily assembled in the downstairs study, James placed a thick manila folder on the kitchen island where Clara was making tea.

“What is this?” Clara asked.

“Elena’s belongings,” James said. “Her lawyer delivered them before I brought Maya home. I haven't opened the inner envelope. It’s addressed to Maya… and to whoever ends up raising her alongside me. I think you have the right to see it before I do.”

Clara stared at the folder. She felt a sharp pang of reluctance. To read the words of the woman who had shared a history with James felt like an intrusion, yet avoiding it meant keeping the ghost alive in their halls.

Later that evening, after James had fallen asleep from sheer physical exhaustion on the living room sofa, Clara sat at the dining table with a mug of chamomile tea. She slipped her finger under the adhesive seal and pulled out a handwritten letter written on cream stationary, along with a small sketchbook.

The letter began in elegant, slanted script:

To the woman who holds this letter,

If you are reading these words, it means my heart has surrendered its battle, and my daughter is in your world. I write this not to ask for your pity, nor to claim a place in a life that does not belong to me.

James never betrayed you. When we met in Sofia, we were two exhausted souls trying to repair broken infrastructure in a war-torn province. What we shared was brief, honest, and entirely concluded long before he spoke your name. And he spoke your name with reverence, Clara. When he told me about you years later, his voice held an awe that told me everything I needed to know.

I kept my pregnancy hidden because I wanted this child to live without pity. But when death became inevitable, I had no choice. I gave Maya to James because he is an honorable man, even when fear makes him foolish. If you find it in your heart to stay, love her not because she is his, but because she is innocent. If you cannot stay, do not hate him for wanting to protect a life he helped create.

With eternal gratitude,

May you like

Elena.

Clara slowly folded the parchment. The words settled over her heart like cool water extinguishing an open flame.
