Chapter 13 - The First Birthday

A year had passed since the night in the hospital corridor.

The Vance backyard was filled with laughter, colorful paper lanterns, and the scent of grilled peaches. Friends from the hospital, neighbors including Mrs. Gable, and colleagues from James’s firm filled the patio chairs.

Maya, dressed in a sunny white sundress with a pale yellow ribbon in her hair—a deliberate nod to her first blanket—crawled happily across the lawn, chasing dandelion seeds.

Clara watched from the porch swing, holding a glass of iced lemonade. James walked over and sat down beside her, their shoulders touching comfortably.

“Remember a year ago?” James murmured, his fingers finding hers and intertwining naturally.

“I remember every second,” Clara admitted softly. “I thought my life was over that night in the maternity ward. I thought trust was like shattered glass—impossible to put back together without bleeding.”

“And now?”

Clara leaned her head against his shoulder. “Now I realize trust isn't a fragile vase. It’s muscle. It tears, it heals, and when it grows back through honesty, it’s stronger than it was before.”

Across the lawn, Mrs. Gable clapped her hands. “Maya! Look who has cake!”
