Chapter 12 - Names and Heritage

Spring brought vibrant green leaves back to the neighborhood. Maya was six months old, rolling over with energetic laughter and attempting to taste every toy within reach.
On a warm Saturday morning, James brought down a wooden box from the attic. Inside were Elena’s sketchbooks, several watercolor landscapes of Mediterranean villages, and a small gold locket containing a photograph of a smiling woman with dark curls and radiant eyes.
“She should have these when she’s older,” Clara said, turning the pages of the sketchbook with deep respect. “She should know where her creative spirit comes from.”
“You don't mind?” James asked softly.
“A child’s heart has room for more than one mother,” Clara replied with conviction. “Elena gave her life; I am giving her my days. Maya will never have to choose between honoring her heritage and loving our home.”

That afternoon, they sat down with their family lawyer. Together, Clara and James signed the formal stepparent adoption petition. When the paperwork was filed, Clara looked down at the new birth certificate application: Maya Elena Vance.
It was not an erasure of the past, but an embrace of all the pieces that had formed their family.
