Chapter 11 - The Bridge of Forgiveness

Late that night, Clara found James sitting in the rocking chair in the nursery. Maya was fast asleep in her crib, her fever finally broken thanks to infant acetaminophen.
Clara walked in quietly and knelt beside the rocking chair, resting her hands on James’s knees.
“I am so sorry,” she said, her voice cracking. “What I said downstairs… was inexcusable.”
James looked down at her, shaking his head gently. “You don't need to apologize for feeling burdened, Clara. You took on someone else’s crisis with grace, and I pushed you too hard.”
“No,” Clara insisted, tears shining in her eyes. “I wanted to punish you for the lie, and I used Maya as a weapon to do it. That was wrong. Elena gave up her life to bring this child into the world. You gave up your comfort to protect her. I don't want to just be the bystander who tolerates her, James. I want to be her mother.”

James leaned forward, burying his face in Clara’s neck. His broad shoulders shook as he wept openly, letting go of the crushing weight he had carried since the night in the hospital hallway.
Clara wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him tightly. In that quiet nursery, amidst the soft rhythm of a sleeping infant’s breath, the lingering ghosts of deceit and insecurity finally dissolved.
