Chapter 1 - The Glass Between Worlds

The silence around Table Seven felt louder than the clatter of silverware. Elena stood rigid beneath the dining room's amber chandeliers, her server apron pressed flat against the baby’s chest. The child’s weight was light, yet it anchored her to the parquet floor with terrifying gravity. Six months of running, six months of quiet studio apartments and cash wages, unraveled in a single heartbeat.

Julian looked up from his seat, dark eyes shadowed with exhaustion. The tailored wool of his suit jacket sat slightly crooked, betraying forty-eight hours of frantic travel. He had lost weight; the clean lines of his jaw were sharper, edged with rough stubble that never belonged in corporate boardrooms. He slowly withdrew his trembling hands, leaving Elena alone with the child.

""You took him across state lines,"" Elena whispered, her vocal cords straining against the knot in her throat. She kept her voice low, mindful of the maître d' watching from the host stand across the room.

""I took him away from my father,"" Julian replied, his voice raspy. ""There's a difference, Elena. You know there is.""

The infant shifted against her shoulder, releasing a soft, milk-scented sigh into the collar of her white shirt. His tiny fingers curled around the fabric, instinctively recognizing the rhythm of her pulse. Elena felt an agonizing warmth bloom beneath her ribs—the maternal bond she had tried to numb with long shifts and sleepless nights. She looked down at Julian's left hand resting on the white linen. The platinum band still caught the warm light.

""He's wearing a ring,"" Elena thought, cold dread washing over the brief warmth. ""He didn't sign the annulment.""

Julian caught her gaze. ""I didn't file the paperwork. I told you I wouldn't let them erase you.""

""Your father’s security team tracked my bank deposits two weeks ago,"" Elena hissed, taking half a step backward. ""If you found me, they are already parked outside.""

Julian stood up abruptly, knocking a dessert spoon onto the carpet with a dull thud. ""Then take the service stairs. Right now.""

Before Elena could turn toward the swinging kitchen doors, the restaurant's heavy front entrance swung open. Two men in charcoal trench coats stepped inside, ignoring the host's polite greeting. Their eyes scanned the high-ceilinged room and locked directly onto Table Seven.
