Chapter 13 - The Wolf’s Den

At eight o'clock the following morning, a sleek black town car pulled into the underground executive garage beneath the Vance Tower in downtown Boston.
Mark Graves opened the rear door, stepping back respectfully as Arthur Vance emerged. Arthur was sixty-five, impeccable in a charcoal Savile Row three-piece suit, his silver hair swept back with aristocratic precision. His eyes were cold, unreadable, and focused entirely on the elevator bank.
""Have they located them?"" Arthur demanded, adjusting his silk cufflink.
""The skiff was spotted near Marsh Island,"" Graves reported, following half a step behind. ""State troopers are securing the perimeter now. We anticipate having the child in custody before the morning session concludes.""
""Good,"" Arthur said, pressing the private key for the 40th-floor penthouse boardroom. ""Tell the media team to release the prepared statement: 'Tragic family breakdown, Julian undergoing private medical treatment, grandfather steps in to safeguard legacy.' You know the drill.""
The elevator doors chimed and slid open onto the 40th floor. The boardroom was surrounded by panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the harbor. Twelve board members, all elderly men in dark suits, sat around an oval mahogany table, murmuring over printed agendas.
Arthur walked in, radiating calm authority. ""Gentlemen. Thank you for assembling on such short notice. As you know, my son Julian has suffered a severe relapse in his emotional health, necessitating emergency—""
The heavy double oak doors at the back of the boardroom swung open with an authoritative crash.
""Julian is quite well, Arthur,"" a dry, aristocratic voice echoed across the room. ""Though I cannot say the same for your blood pressure.""
Arthur’s hands froze on the mahogany table. Every board member turned in unison.
Eleanor Vance walked into the room, leaning lightly on her cane, flanked by two uniformed federal marshals. Directly behind her walked Elena, clean and composed in a crisp dark blazer, holding baby Leo securely in an ergonomic sling across her chest.
Julian followed them, his jaw bruised and purple, but his suit immaculate and his posture commanding.

""Eleanor?"" Arthur stammered, the color draining from his face until his skin resembled parchment. ""This... this is an executive session. You have no standing here.""
""I have forty-nine percent of the standing in this entire building, Arthur,"" Eleanor said, her cane clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. ""And my grandson holds the rest.""
