Chapter 4 - Beneath the Cobblestones

The cellar smelled of damp concrete, cured fat, and sawdust. Elena descended the wooden steps in total darkness, feeling each tread with the toe of her non-slip work shoes. In her arms, Leo had gone completely quiet, sensing the panic vibrating through her chest.

Above her, the muffled sound of a struggle echoed through the floorboards. She heard Julian shouting—demanding to see a warrant, asserting his parental rights—followed by the distinct sound of a body being slammed against brick. Elena bit down on her knuckle to stifle a scream. Every instinct screamed at her to turn back, to pull Julian away from the concrete, but the soft warmth of the boy in her arms anchored her to reality.

""I'm coming back for him,"" she promised the dark. ""We're coming back.""

She navigated the long cellar using the faint glow of an exit sign at the far end. The basement belonged to a row of historic commercial buildings, connected by historic coal tunnels. She pushed through a warped fire door that opened onto a quiet residential side street, two avenues away from the restaurant's chaos.

Rain was beginning to fall—fine, icy needles that threatened to chill the infant within minutes. Elena unbuttoned her server shirt, pulling Leo against her bare skin beneath the cloth, wrapping her dark apron around both of them like a makeshift sling.

She walked swiftly along the pavement, head lowered, avoiding the reflections of streetlamps in the puddles. The city around her was oblivious to the quiet war being waged between generational wealth and a mother's claim.

She reached Elm Street. Parked beneath a weeping willow sat Julian’s silver sedan, untouched. Julian had told her his car was here, but he hadn't given her the keys.

Elena stepped closer to the vehicle, peering through the rain-streaked window. On the passenger seat lay a small baby bag and a cell phone, its screen lighting up repeatedly in the dark interior: INCOMING CALL: ARTHUR VANCE.
