Chapter 11 - The Matriarch's Return

Eleanor Vance stood on the slick cedar planks of the dock, her silver hair woven into a thick braid that fell over a dark woolen shawl. She was seventy-two, frail in appearance, but her pale blue eyes possessed the cold, unyielding clarity of a hawk.

""Bring that child inside before he catches pneumonia,"" Eleanor commanded, her voice cutting through the damp air without a tremor.

Julian stepped off the skiff first, his boots squelching on the wet wood. He stood before his mother for the first time in eight years, the baby sleeping soundly against his chest. Eleanor looked at the infant, then reached out a weathered hand, gently brushing her thumb across Leo's cheek. Her eyes softened for a fraction of a second before hardening into steel.

""He looks like you did when Arthur stole you from my nursery,"" she whispered.

Elena followed Julian up the ramp, clutching the leather-bound ledger against her ribs. Eleanor turned her gaze upon Elena, studying her crisp, soiled server shirt, her dark circles, and the fierce defensive posture she held.

""You're Elena,"" Eleanor stated, nodding once. ""You're the girl who threw the engagement ring into the fountain at the country club.""

""I threw it at his father's head,"" Elena corrected quietly. ""The fountain was an accident.""

A faint, ghost-like smile touched Eleanor's lips. ""Good. Then you might actually survive tomorrow.""

Inside the pilot station, the living quarters were warm and surprisingly comfortable, lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and maritime navigation maps. A kettle hissed softly on a wood-burning cookstove.

""Mother, how are you here?"" Julian asked, setting Leo down in a padded wicker basket near the stove. ""Arthur said you were in a specialized memory care facility in Zurich.""

""Arthur puts everyone who disagrees with him in a facility, Julian,"" Eleanor said, pouring hot water over loose black tea. ""He forgot that I still own forty-nine percent of the real estate holding firm that controls his precious marina. When Frank called me three months ago, I walked out of that clinic and took a private chartered freighter to Nova Scotia.""

She turned to Elena and held out her hand for the ledger. ""Give it to me, child. Let's see what my former husband thinks is worth destroying my family for.""
