Chapter 10 - The Saltmarsh Sanctuary

By three in the morning, the rain had tapered off into a thick, clinging salt mist. They abandoned both the sedan and Frank's truck in a deserted boat ramp parking lot, switching to an ancient fiberglass skiff that Frank kept hidden among the cattails of the coastal saltmarshes.
Julian held Leo against his chest, shielding the sleeping boy with the folds of Frank's oversized oilskin jacket. The rhythm of the outboard motor was steady, a low, guttural vibration that lulled the child into a deep sleep despite the damp cold.
Elena sat across from Julian, watching the way his bruised fingers gently stroked Leo’s soft curls. The exhaustion on Julian’s face was total, but the haunted, desperate look that had terrified her in the restaurant was gone, replaced by a fierce, protective stillness.
""We can't stay on the water forever,"" Elena said softly over the hum of the engine. ""Arthur will have the Coast Guard patrolling the bay by sunrise.""
""We aren't staying on the water,"" Frank called back from the tiller. ""We're going to the old pilot station on Marsh Island. It's federal territory, decommissioned fifty years ago. Arthur has no friends on that island.""
Julian looked up at Elena, reaching across the bench to take her hand. His skin was warm despite the sea spray. ""I'm sorry I brought him to your workplace tonight, El. I didn't know where else to go. I thought... I thought if you saw him, you'd know I never gave up on finding you.""
""I thought you hated me for leaving,"" she confessed, her voice barely audible. ""His lawyers told me that if I stayed, they would frame my brother for the warehouse fire.""
Julian closed his eyes, a wave of profound sorrow washing over his face. ""My brother died three years ago, Elena. Arthur lied to you to get you out of the house before the trust matured.""
Elena stared at him, horror tightening her chest. ""He told me Tommy was alive and facing twenty years.""
""Tommy died in hospice in Maine,"" Julian said, tears cutting clean lines through the grime on his cheeks. ""Arthur manufactured the entire file. He wanted you gone because you refused to sign the prenuptial waiver that surrendered all future children to the trust.""
Before Elena could process the sheer cruelty of Arthur's deception, the skiff rounded the marsh bend. The pilot station loomed out of the fog—a stark, concrete tower built on granite stilts.
Standing on the wooden dock, illuminated by a hand-held halogen lantern, was an elderly woman leaning on a cane.

""Frank,"" Julian murmured, sitting upright. ""Who is that?""
""Someone who has wanted to put Arthur Vance in prison for thirty-five years,"" Frank replied, cutting the engine. ""Your mother.""
