Chapter 1 - The Midnight Intruder

The ambient glow of the bedside lamp cast long, gentle shadows across the master bedroom, illuminating the sanctuary of warmth that Mark and Elena had built together. Outside, the autumn wind whispered against the glass, but inside, the air was thick with the scent of lavender and the soft, rhythmic breathing of domestic peace. That peace, however, was about to be delightfully interrupted. A small, pajama-clad figure emerged from the darkness of the hallway like a stealthy nocturnal explorer on an urgent mission. Two-year-old Leo, clutching his trusty blue and brown teddy bears, scaled the edge of the mattress with the determination of an experienced mountaineer. He wedged himself right between his parents, tugging insistently at the heavy grey fleece blanket. With wide, innocent eyes and a voice full of absolute conviction, he looked straight at his startled father and announced that mommy was completely full because she already had him. Mark, blinking away sleep, stared at his son in utter bewilderment before Elena burst into a fit of musical, unrestrained laughter. The banter that followed—about whether there was still room for a father or if the remaining space was strictly reserved for mommy's feet—dissolved the cold night air into pure joy. Yet, just as Mark pulled the blanket back over their shoulders and peace seemed restored, Leo stopped laughing, turned his head sharply toward the dark hallway, and whispered that someone else was coming up the stairs.
