Chapter 5 - Ghosts of the Past

The cabin door stood slightly ajar, creaking rhythmically in the wind like a welcoming sentinel of the past. Mark pushed the heavy wooden door open, the sound echoing loudly in the silent interior as a cloud of ancient dust danced in the slivers of sunlight piercing through the broken roof tiles. The interior was remarkably well-preserved: a stone fireplace dominated the far wall, surrounded by antique furniture covered in white linen sheets, and a heavy oak desk cluttered with old surveying equipment. Elena stayed near the doorway with Leo, keeping a watchful eye on the surroundings while Mark ventured deeper into the room. His footsteps crunched on the floorboards as he approached the desk, noticing a stack of unopened letters addressed directly to his father, postmarked from decades ago. He picked one up, his fingers trembling as he read the sender's name—it was from his grandfather, pleading for a reconciliation that never happened. Every corner of the room seemed saturated with echoes of a broken family history, waiting to be healed or shattered entirely. Just as Mark reached for the leather diary resting on the center of the desk, the heavy front door slammed shut behind them with an earsplitting bang, locking automatically from the outside.
