Chapter 2 - Morning Light and Little Footprints

Morning filtered through the sheer curtains in pale, golden shafts, bringing with it the bustling energy of a new day. Mark stood by the kitchen counter, nursing a steaming mug of black coffee, while Elena prepared breakfast, her grey and white patterned pajamas rustling softly with every movement. Leo was already wide awake, his dinosaur-patterned pajamas a blur as he raced around the living room floorboards. But today, the usual chaotic energy felt different; it was charged with a strange, secretive focus. Leo had abandoned his teddy bears by the sofa and was squatting intently near the base of the bookshelf, pulling at a loose floor panel that Mark had never noticed before. As Mark walked over to investigate, the toddler triumphantly extracted a small, rolled-up piece of yellowed parchment tied with a faded red ribbon. Mark knelt beside his son, his heart skipping a beat as he untied the ribbon and unrolled the brittle paper. It wasn't just a child’s scribble; it was a meticulously drawn map of their own backyard, marked with unfamiliar symbols and a bold red X near the roots of the ancient oak tree. Elena peered over Mark’s shoulder, her smile fading into a look of profound curiosity. Before either of them could utter a single word, Leo pointed a tiny finger out the kitchen window toward the oak tree, where a shadow flickered across the grass.
