Chapter 11 - The Blueprint of Tomorrow

With the clock ticking down and danger closing in from all sides, the family realized that staying put was no longer an option. Aunt Clara pulled a set of heavy iron keys from her pocket, tossing them to Mark and explaining that an old, abandoned logging station deep in the northern mountains served as the only truly secure fallback location. Mark loaded their remaining supplies into the trunk of the car while Elena carefully bundled a sleeping Leo into his car seat, their movements swift and coordinated under the pressure of imminent threat. Clara opted to stay behind to cover their tracks, promising to misdirect the enforcers if they came knocking on the front door. As Mark backed the vehicle out of the driveway, he caught one final glimpse of Clara standing on the porch under the amber light, watching them vanish into the misty night. The winding mountain road was slick with black ice, testing Mark’s driving skills to the absolute limit as they climbed higher into the dense, snow-dusted pine forests. Just as the distant lights of the valley faded completely from view behind them, the car’s engine sputtered violently, the dashboard lights flickered and died, and they rolled to a complete stop in the middle of a pitch-black mountain pass.
