Chapter 12 - Ambush at the Crossroads

The highway was largely deserted as they rocketed out of the forest trails and onto the asphalt of Route 12, the wind screaming past their ears like a freight train. Jax kept the throttle pinned, weaving through the morning fog with reckless mastery, knowing every curve and hidden dip in the road by heart. But as they approached the old iron bridge crossing the Blackwood River, a pair of unmarked black SUVs pulled out from the side road, completely blocking both lanes of the bridge. The drivers had anticipated their route. Jax’s eyes widened behind his tinted goggles; there was no time to brake, no room to turn around. ""Hold on!"" he yelled over the roar of the engine. Instead of slowing down, Jax twisted the throttle wider, hurtling the heavy chopper straight toward the narrow gap between the two barricading vehicles. The men inside the SUVs scrambled out, shouting and drawing weapons, but Jax slammed his heavy boot down on the pavement, drifting the rear tire in a wide arc of screaming rubber and flying sparks. They smashed through a wooden warning sign, grazed the side panel of the right SUV with a deafening metallic screech, and cleared the blockade by inches, launching themselves onto the open highway beyond before the enemy could even raise their weapons to fire.
