Chapter 2 - The Glow of the Screen

Hesitation warred with raw curiosity in the young girl’s mind. The asphalt was freezing beneath her scuffed sneakers as she took one cautious step forward, then another. The rugged biker, forty-eight years old with a thick beard and dark, weather-worn hair, remained completely motionless, his piercing gaze fixed on the gravel between them. As she drew closer, she could see the intricate web of ink sprawling across his muscular forearms, tattoos that told stories of a life far more violent and complicated than her own. She dropped to her knees just out of arm's reach, her fingers trembling as she picked up the smartphone. The screen lit up instantly, displaying a single unread notification: a photograph of a woman she recognized immediately—her mother, looking much younger, smiling beside this very same biker outside a neon-lit motel. Her breath hitched in her throat. She looked up from the screen to meet his solemn eyes, the silence between them heavier than any words could ever be. Before she could muster the courage to ask the question burning on her tongue, the distant wail of a police siren began to slice through the night air, echoing off the canyon walls.
