Chapter 13 - The Safehouse in the Hills

Adrenaline coursed through their veins as Jax finally cut the engine, coasting the cooling bike into the overgrown driveway of an isolated cabin high up in the limestone hills. This place was different from the ranger station—it was fortified, hidden behind a thick stand of cedar and accessible only via a washed-out goat trail that no standard vehicle could ever navigate. They dismounted stiffly, the reality of the near-miss settling over them like lead weight. Jax kicked the kickstarter lock into place, pulled off his helmet, and ran a calloused hand through his sweat-dampened hair, scanning the surrounding tree line for any sign of pursuit. The girl sat on the porch steps, her knees pulled up to her chest, staring down at the smartphone which still glowed with the digital evidence of the conspiracy. Jax walked over, sat down beside her on the splintered wood, and placed a heavy, reassuring hand on her small shoulder—the first truly tender gesture he had offered all night. ""They're going to try everything they have to cut us off before we reach the state line,"" Jax said softly, his voice steady and resolved. ""But we've got the one thing they can't buy or delete: the truth."" She looked up at him, a faint, fragile smile touching the corners of her lips for the first time. ""My mom always said you were stubborn enough to move mountains,"" she whispered. Jax let out a low, gravelly chuckle that sounded like grinding stones, the last walls around his hardened heart finally crumbling away completely.
