Chapter 3 - Flight into the Pines

The sudden wail of the siren snapped the tension like a frayed wire. The biker stood up with sudden, coiled agility, his towering frame casting an imposing shadow over her small figure. Without a word, he grabbed the handlebars of his heavy machine, his jaw clenched in grim determination. He looked down at the girl, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that barely carried over the rising wind. ""Get behind me, kid. Now,"" he commanded, leaving no room for argument. She didn't hesitate; the flashing red and blue lights were already painting the distant fog. Scrambling onto the heavy passenger seat, she wrapped her small arms tightly around his leather-clad waist as he revved the engine, the rear tire kicking up a shower of loose gravel before shooting forward into the night. They veered sharply off the main highway, plunging down an unpaved logging road swallowed by towering pines and absolute darkness. Branches whipped past them like ghostly fingers, but the biker handled the heavy machine with effortless, terrifying precision. They rode deep into the labyrinth of the forest until the sounds of pursuit faded entirely into the wind, finally cutting the engine in front of a decaying, abandoned ranger station. As the forest fell silent once more, the girl slid off the bike, clutching the smartphone to her chest like a shield, realizing her entire life had just changed forever.
