Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Coup

The conference room on the fifty-fourth floor of the Vance Tower offered a panoramic view of the skyline, but the atmosphere inside was suffocating. Eleanor sat at the end of the long glass table, flanked only by her personal secretary. The other twelve board members sat at the far end, deliberately creating an icy gulf between themselves and the matriarch.

The heavy double doors opened, and Julian walked in. He wore a clean, dark suit, carrying a single manila folder. He did not sit down; he walked straight to the podium at the front of the room.

""You have no authority here, Julian,"" Eleanor hissed, trying to preserve her regal veneer, though dark bags had formed beneath her makeup. ""You are a minority shareholder.""

""Not anymore, Mother,"" Julian said evenly. ""Grandfather left a stipulation in his secondary trust. In the event that the primary trustee engages in conduct resulting in criminal indictment or gross moral turpitude, voting rights automatically transfer to the next direct heir.""

Julian placed a signed legal affidavit from Judge Miller’s clerk onto the glass table.

""The board has already reviewed the documents,"" Arthur Sterling announced, standing up. ""Eleanor Vance, by unanimous vote of the executive committee, you are stripped of your title as Chief Executive Officer and your executive board seat is revoked effective immediately.""

Eleanor’s hands began to tremble violently. ""You cannot do this to me! I built this company! I made all of you!""

""You almost killed my son for your pride,"" Julian said softly, looking down at her. ""Security will escort you from the building. Your personal belongings will be couriered to your country house.""

Eleanor looked at the faces around the table, but every single board member looked away in shame and rejection.
