Chapter 9 - The Hearing Begins

Courtroom 402 smelled of polished wood and damp umbrellas. Eleanor Vance sat at the plaintiff's table, wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, surrounded by three junior associates and Harrison Cole. She did not even glance back when Julian, Amy, and Sarah Lin walked through the swinging wooden gate.
Judge Miller, an elderly man with thick silver hair, banged his gavel. ""Matter of Vance versus Vance, petition for emergency temporary guardianship of an infant. Mr. Cole, present your motion.""
Cole stood up with practiced gravitas. ""Your Honor, last evening, the infant Leo Vance suffered an acute medical crisis resulting from gross maternal negligence. Respondent Amy Vance forced the sick child into a social setting, refusing assistance, purely out of domestic spite. We have eight sworn affidavits from prominent citizens confirming she treated the child as an accessory while performing menial tasks against the advice of family.""
Eleanor dabbed the corner of her eye with a pristine lace handkerchief, feigning the agony of a concerned grandmother.
""Your Honor, this is an urgent matter of the child’s safety,"" Cole concluded. ""We ask for immediate custody transfer to Mrs. Eleanor Vance, pending psychological evaluation of the mother.""
Judge Miller nodded gravely, turning to Sarah Lin. ""Counsel for the respondents. What say you?""

Sarah rose calmly, smoothing the lapels of her slightly worn jacket. ""Your Honor, Mr. Cole’s presentation is a masterclass in creative writing. Fortunately, we deal in cold, hard reality. We submit Respondent Exhibit A: raw, unedited audiovisual footage from the Vance dining room recorded yesterday evening at eight-fifteen.""
Eleanor’s posture stiffened instantly.
